Decommissioning of the biological shield & hot cells

Project scope

KTE (formerly WAK) is a nuclear research institute, situated in Karlsruhe, Germany. The site was in use until the 1990s, after which it was shut down and prepared for decommissioning.

Tecnubel is engaged for decommissioning the activated part of the biological shield of the KNK reactor. For this, a cold test setup was initially developed to test the remotely operated equipment, tools and various procedures, before they were used in actual conditions. The decommissioning project consists in the removal, conditioning and transportation of the activated biological shield (concrete).

On the same site, Tecnubel's experts provide assistance in the remotely-controlled decommissioning of hot cells, which were until recently being used for research and treatment of irradiated fuel.
